Melbourne Earthquake
#1
Hey guys,

Did any one feel the earth quake near Melbourne that was approximately 9pm this evening? I heard about it on the news but I never felt anything <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I did not feel a thing in Geelong.

Interestingly:
The epicentre of the quake was 96 kms from Melbourne, near Kurrumburra in Gippsland (38.377°S, 145.714°E), but was felt as far away as Sunbury.

The same area was struck by a quake measuring 3.7 only two months ago, which was followed 12 minutes later by an aftershock of magnitude 1.8.
I was in a restaurant with some friends at the time. I did not notice anything personally, but one of my friends said that she definitely did notice, and she thought "What was that? We don't have earthquakes in Melbourne!", but she felt vindicated when she got home and the news said there had been one!

Hi there kishi... where were you located (suburb) during the earthquake?

my apartment is near the city area..

glen, maybe the denser infrastructure in and nearby the city area (in the case of kishi) is responsible for more noticeable earthquakes as compared to suburban areas (where you are located) that are more sprawled out with less to reverberate... just a thought based on no actual science or technical knowledge.

that could explain it! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

It did $1,000,000 of improvements <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacky.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

The walls and roof shook big time.

my gf did but I didn't, even though we're both in the same apartment (southbank). I hope the building designs around here are cutting-edge, & that we never get around a 8 richer scale quake.

Well it sounds like if you want to feel the next one then you better head to Korumburra! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> Who knows it might become a tourist destination for earthquake thrill seekers <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

on the news they said there will probably be more earthquakes around Korumburra and they could be bigger but they might also be smaller <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I'd rather not seeing I felt the Newcastle earthquake many years ago as a kid, that was freaky, the whole house shook really bad.

18:21 (6:21pm) on the 22nd of September 2009 another Earthquake struck SE of Melbourne.

I'm not sure of the Magnitude or where it was centred.

My only source for this is ME and my mother.

It sounded like a truck flipping over onto the house/the petrol station down the road blowing up.

xD was fun in my wheelie chair xD <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/officechair.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/officechair.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/officechair.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />
