Broadband Isp Melbourne
#1
Hi everyone,

I was just wondering on your views as to which is the best broad band provider in melbourne. I am currently with Optus Cable and they are pretty good but I am paying about $55 per month (for a 12gb daytime and 24 gb nightime plan) and was wondering whether there was any other better offerings around.

Cheers, Glen

What speeds are you getting glen? Adsl 1 or 2?

I'm currently on the AANET 25gb, 1.5mb speeds.

I'm paying $60/month (unbundled) bundled price is $55.

I suggest checking out AANET, they are popular with alot of people. You should also try searching on whirlpool forums, they have an ISP search which lets you fill in the details you want (speed;quota;adsl 1/2;location;ect)

And it narrows down a list of isps which fit the criteria you search.

I have cable at the moment. The good thing about it on my current plan is that uploads are not counted. But I believe the more recent optus cable plans count both uploads and downloads.

Thanks for reminding me about whirlpool. I will go have a look.

Cheers, Glen

ps. please go easy on the signatures and self promotion.

Yeah TPG sounds pretty good. They are on my short list! The 50gb plans sounds good.

I am still undecided. I started investigating mobile internet as well. Apparently Virgin Mobile Post Paid is a good start. Though I actually don't have a laptop and there isn't much point having mobile internet without a laptop! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It is good to see the prices of those things are coming down too <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />

Yeah I hear the NextG network is good but I still remember how telstra (many many years ago) used to cheat us on the phone bill so I am reluctant to go back to them.

We took up optus as soon as was physically possible just to escape from telstra. It was such a relief at the time!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> No offence to any telstra workers who are reading this. I am sure it was not your fault! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hello,

New in Melbourne and here. We (family of 3) are heavy Internet users, arrived here in Melbourne last saturday from Switzerland. In Switzerland we had an unlimited internet connection for the equivalent of approx AUS70/month. Does that exist here?

I would start with TPG. They have some big download plans <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':gathering:' />

Thanks for your replies.

But I still am not sure how it works here. Back "home" i could just surf, download...as much as I wanted for this fixed montlhy rate. Is this not possible in Australia? Then how do you know when you have reached your monthly "limit"? Confused...

I think any person would struggle to use that much bandwidth! You could probably watch streamed tv all day long and still be ok i think <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':gathering:' />

I think i get 12gb daytime and 24 gb night time limit per month. That costs me about $55 per month. I am with optus cable. I am fairly happy with it. I barely ever get service interuptions. Maybe it drops out once a year!

Yeah there might be better plans but they are very reliable so i factor that into the cost <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I have had lots of use from only two, TPG and Netspace, both give excellent continuity of service.

Why did you switch from Netspace to TPG, Peter?

I know it is very difficult to talk to a person at Telstra.

I found the best way is to talk gibberish to their auto answer thingo!

I found the best way to deal with any auto answer service is to just hit the pound, asterisk or just any keys repeatedly until the message "You appear to be having trouble with our auto response system" is verbalized. I'm not sure if this technique works with all auto answer systems.

Hey guys, I never really speak to optus because it always works <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> But yes I am sure there are other good companies around.

Is there an online version, Peter?

Thanks so much for uploading the fun and informative article, Peter.

I still think that the pound and asterisk, or random number keys hit repeatedly is an even quicker way to reach a human being.

Have you seen that the "Aged" has quoted "experts" as saying that only 50% of homes will be connected to NBN by 2017.

And that 90% not until 2025!

No, I have not.. don't read the papers.

Will Geelong be in the 90%? Maybe not?

Surely, Geelong will be in the 90%... maybe not the 50% only considering that many Foxtel satellite dishes suggest that Foxtel coaxial cable has not been laid here, in my area at least (Geelong West).

...anyway, I have already been thinking about moving back to Melbourne since August this year... pretty much on my 1 year anniversary in Geelong.

Can you wait that long?

I'm a patient fellow

Will that system be old hat by then?

Any technical implementation rapidly becomes old hat.

Will the NBN be a lame duck?

Let's just see how the roll-out in Tasmania proceeds.

If you don't read papers, where do you get your news hit? TV? PC?

Generally, ABC's Radio National.

If you listen to ABC news on the radio for long enough you get up to date with pretty much EVERYTHING <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> It really is pretty good.

Hi Peter, I find that News Radio (the one i listen to mostly...1026 AM) does not really offer much in the way of opinion. They just tell you what is going on (more fact based style of presenting). Though they do interview people of course so you do get some opinions expressed.
