Hey guys, has anyone had experience with Costco?



I know the store will be opening in Melbourne Docklands pretty soon - 17 August 2009.

I was surprised to hear it was members only! It costs $60 per year for an individual to be a member. That is pretty steep! They better be very cheap to justify that!



Apparently they are selling "groceries, confectionary, appliances, television and media, automotive supplies, tyres, toys, hardware, sporting goods, jewellery, watches, cameras, books, housewares, apparel, health and beauty aids, tobacco, furniture, office supplies and office equipment."

Does anyone know where to park at Docklands? Costco Free Parking? I hope so!



I like this aspect of the Costco pricing:

"Our margins are transparent, we don't mark up anything over 15 per cent margin, which is unique in the retail sector anywhere in the world."

Yeah but if you go by tram then cannot carry all the bargains home! Hahaha. Oh well. I am not sure if I can just go and have a snoop or whether I need to be a member first. It would be good if I could try before I buy! Maybe a trial costco membership would entice a few new customers.

The warehouse, in the heart of Waterfront City in the Docklands precinct, will be open seven days a week and has 550 car parks on site.

There’s a healthy queue of shoppers for the photo printing service, which at 12 cents a print is the cheapest I’ve seen in a retail location.

Apple is rarely generous with its discounts, but the iPod prices when I visited were actually lower than from Apple’s own online store. An 8GB Nano was $174.99 (versus $199 at Apple), while the 8GB Touch was $294.99 (against Apple’s $329). The full 32GB Touch is $499.99 (Apple charges $549).

You can browse the store without paying the $60 membership fee by singing in as a visitor, but you’ll need to sign up (including producing photo ID) and pay up if you want to purchase anything.

Costco Docklands has 550 free parking spaces underneath the warehouse itself (the Tyre Centre is also under the building). We arrived at 10 am, and were immediately directed to overflow parking in a nearby multilevel parking structure. So much for free parking! But it was only $5 flat rate and not far at all from the warehouse. But at this point we knew that my doubts about it being busy for opening day were completely unfounded.

Waiting for an arthroscopy to my knee - Sept 8th now and than rehab a few weeks after that before I go down to check it all out.

Haha with the way things sounded from Costco opening it could well be... But no it is a skiing injury from a recent trip to NZ.

Yeah should be fine, just a little bit of cartlidge damage hoping to be back on my feet (pardon the pun) within a couple of weeks of the operation

Thanks for sharing the price list! Really doesn't seem that cheap! I think I will stick to Aldi for groceries.
