Getting Started In Melbourne.
#1
Dear People of Melbourne,

My family and I will be making the move to Melbourne in 7 weeks time. We consist of me, my husband, and three daughters, aged 9, 6 and a 5 month old baby. We are leaving Northern Ireland behind us and starting a new life in Australia. We picked Melbourne for its diverse culture, out door living and family friendly persona, although having never set foot in Australia before, we are taking big a step into the unknown.

We have our flights booked, a room in Box Hill North booked for a month, and 10 boxes for shipping a few of our belongings, and that's about it. We have studied the areas, schools, life styles and watched every programme about Australia on TV and read every Australian info website out there, to try and prepare. We have an Aussie Bank Account, a PO box and even an Aussie Skype number. We could do with an IT managers job of Tim, or at least and Interview for one in mid December to set our minds at ease, but we know that is unlikely to materialise until our feet are on Aussie soil. We will just have to take a leap of faith.

I would love to hear from others with similar family units to see what life is really like in Melbourne and if you guys have any advice on getting settled in, or even just on the best things to do at Christmas time in Melbourne, considering, this will be the first time the girls are experiencing life away from the UK without their Grand Father and pet Dog. :-(

Once we have a job for Tim lined up, we will then be deciding upon schools etc, so advice there would be appreciated, also.

Looking forward to joining you all soon.

Chrystal & Family

As a regular visitor there one thing to consider is the UV rays are very high, even in winter, so be very careful about how much time you spend outdoors in the sunlight. Strongly recommend you use an appropriate skin protection, especially for the kids.

You also need a myki card for public transport access; coins are no longer accepted, but the tram service is excellent.

If you're in the Southbank area you might like PJ O Brien's Irish pub; it's a decent feed for a reasonable price Smile
