Meaningful Friendships?!?
#1
I have just moved here from the US and I have been looking to make some friends aside from just my flatmate. I have done the typical Craigslist (although thats not as big here as it is in the US) and all that, but I just cannot really find anyone that isn't shallow. I am 24 and looking to make friends that aren't just fair weather friends. Anyone fit that bill or know of a good place to meet such persons??

Hi there,

welcome to Melbourne! I am sure you will make plenty of friends. Do you have any particular hobbies/interests? You might consider joining some clubs to help widen your circle of friends.

Cheers, Glen

Hi Glen,

Hmm, hobbies, well my 18 month old son keeps me fairly busy. I think that the fact that I'm "up the duff" as you Aussies like to say is also hindering my ability to make new friends. The obvious option is to join a Mom's group. But that isn't what I want and need. I am looking to make friends that I can escape from my daily life with, you know? I am a mommy 24/7 so when I go out and want ME time, I would like to leave my home life at home and get to be ME. I like to dance and love all kinds of music... I love reading and writing and speak a little bit of Spanish. I am pretty much up for anything. This is my first time travelling overseas so I am keen on just about any suggestion!

Language course might be an option. Or maybe have some dancing lessons? I think is a pretty social thing to do.

Hi J Marie,

I'm also interested in meeting new people. Most of my close friends are constantly moving interstate or overseas so I know how hard it can be to meet new people. I'm a couple of year older than you but I love going out to dance and I can speak spanish too <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> Do you have an email you can be contacted on?

hey there,

im also a new american in town (just arrived on the 17th), and am also looking to meet some cool/fun people. i'm a newlywed - my husband's work brought him here, and i want to be more than just mrs. husband's job. a bit about me: i'm from colorado (born in massachusetts), like the outdoors, but also movies, music, etc. etc. back in america i was a water rights lawyer (a new one - just graduated in 06), but i didn't really enjoy it, so i'm kind of glad to have the opportunity to explore something new. right now i'm thinking about finding some work or volunteer stuff to do. in the meantime, i'd be up for coffee, drinks, whatever... really, now that i think about it, i'd rather meet cool people than work anyway. =)
