Missing Melbourne
#1
After nearly ten years living in Beijing and braving a b-cold winter right now, I'm missing the warmth and warmth of Melbourne.

Instead of linking daily to The Age Online as I plough through some Chinese porridge (gruel - blech!), I'm hankering for the smell of ink on newsprint and Bacon and Eggs at Funkies at Toorak Village.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh ...

You might need to air mail some Nutri Grain or Wheat Bix!!! Hahaha

Yah twas meant to have been 34 degrees here today =S Didn't feel too overwhelming - maybe that's a sign i'm finally getting immuned to the crazy heat Melbourne now produces every summer! lol

Got some cooler days forcast for the weekend - 20s i believe and possible thunderstorms and showers.

I have the "Weetabix" at an outrageous price and Cornflakes imported out of Germany of all places.

There oughta be a law.

I've managed to find two jars in the past 5 years. It's treated like gold when I have it. Not that any Chinese would want to steal it.

OMG dude, that is sooo sad. LMAO - normally overseas they only sell it in tubes in the cooking isle - it's meant to be handy for putting in to make flavour.... i would miss it SO much!

Missing Tim Tams? What else is there ..... hmmmm ... okay i'm probably not helping your home sickness here! LOL

Have you been back for a holiday at all?

Would you pay $40 for a packet of Tim Tams? That's the PPP (Purchase Price Parity) here. Oreos are much better value and they have a pack of fake Oreos called ... wait for it ... "Australia". Same colours (and recipe) as the Oreo pack and with an Australian flag. BONUS! It's the best value chocolate fix in China.

Not for about six years. Oh ... except for a one day visit when I needed to organise money to buy an apartment in Beijing. Only had time to catch a couple of movies at the Lumiere, watch a bit of cricket and throw hotel slippers at the TV over the downslide in quality of morning programming.

Where's Steve Liebmann? Where's Ernie? Bert's wig even has a receding hairline!

Did you get to see any of the Games in Beijing?

No. Only the opening and closing ceremonies.

The games are heavily focused on 'home' athletes (as is the coverage everywhere) so it wasn't of great interest. It's frustrating to be watching a Chinese struggler when you know you're missing an Australian win (and vice versa, I should add).

Why not go to McDonalds for a hot bacon and egg breakfast?
That hadn't occurred to me. Are their breakfasts passably genuine?

So anyway what is your job in Beijing?

Do you work for a multinational ......

My full-time job is Professor at a key university. I teach business subjects: Strategy, Marketing, HRM and the like. It's bit different for a foreigner in China. You need to be versatile and teach across a range of disciplines.

In fact, today, I'm lecturing a group from Latrobe Uni on Negotiation in China.

In my spare time, I do contract work for various companies ... mostly American.

Much of the time, I'm on holiday ... 8 months of it so far this year! But I always find plenty to do. I'm also official house-husband to my Chinese wife and two and a half year old daughter.

I don't want you to think that I'm a lazy man!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Sleepy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

At my age - and with a young wife and baby girl - I have to watch my figure. Unfortunately, it has a striking resemblance to a figure 8. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Money Eyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

Thanks terence! Yeah I think chinese kids are very cute.

When I was there I also went to Li Jiang in Yunan Province. Was pretty nice. Though I would give the Tiger Leaping Gorge a miss! I am scared of heights i now realise! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

And I liked Hong Kong quite a bit as everyone spoke english! What a relief!
