A great day out in Melbourne
OK I confess I love Melbourne and have lived here (on and off) for over fifty years! Having lived abroad for various times I have several over seas visitors and in recent years I think this is a pretty good way to spend one day in Melbourne. There are plenty of maps, visitor booths but if you get lost most Melbourne people love helping the tourists out. The times are just a guide.
10am
Start you day at Fed Square. Federation Square .. Melbourne people either love it or hate it but you must see it. Thereâs quite a bit to do. I suggest you visit the Racing Museum. Even if horse racing is not your thing to really understand Melbourne you have to soak up the devotion Melbourne has to the sport. Of course Melbourne Cup day is the biggest day of the year. Long may it be public holiday. The whole country stops to watch a horse race! The museum is superb and a very reasonable admission price. Some time in Melbourne you must go to the Melbourne museum and see Phar Lap.. Our most loved icon. The Fed Square museum however focuses on some other famous horses and also you will get an idea of how much we love the ggâs (horses)â
In Fed Square there are other great attractions and you can go and look at them later on your trip. Recommend the centre for the moving image.
11.30
Pop over the road and look at the facade of our beloved Flinders street Station. My visitors love this. Itâs a great place to people watch and nearly every Victorian has met some one under the clocks. It is Melbourneâs number one meeting place.
Now wander down to the beautiful Block Arcade 282 Collins Street and you simply MUST have a pot of tea and the famous pin wheel sandwiches in the delightful Hopetoun Tea Rooms.
After lunch/morning tea wander to Royal Arcade where every hour Ogg and Magog put on a show. These beautiful carvings done in about 1842 and they are quite charming. The Arcade itself is certainly worth a look.
1.30 Grab a tram, a 48 and you have to go to the Fitzroy Gardens. Keep this in mind for twilight as its then you will see several beautiful brush tail possums. You may even see the elusive ring tail! Visit Captain Cooks cottage, it may not be the most stunning attraction but every Melbournian has a special fondness for it. Other attractions include the canoe tree, conservatory, JFK memorial and most important the fairy tree. You may well think what on earth is this about. Itâs just a tree with carvings but the story of the tree is wonderful.
3.00 Take the 48 tram back into town and take a wander down Collins Street. Lots of lovely buildings and shop worth exploring.
On the corner of Flinders and Collins is the town hall. Over the road is the City Square or sadly what is left of it (that is another story and Melbourne people love telling it).
Wander down to Young and Jacksons Hotel for a quiet drink with Chloe, our first lady of Melbourne.
