Docklands
#1
Hi,

Is the Docklands area in Melbourne the 'new' CBD for Melbourne similar to Canary Wharf , Docklands in London...? Or maybe a Darling Harbour, Sydney lookalike type of thing?

Thanx <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':fishie:' />

I think they are trying to make it a Darling Harbour type precinct. It is nowhere near complete. There is some places of interest there though. They just opened Ice House and the new ANZ building which is the biggest building in Australia.

But to answer your question, the Melbourne City Council has jurisdiction over it so you could argue it is part of the CBD.

I havent had a problem getting to it, You can use the FREE tourist tram and that drops you off in the centre, you can just also walk over the bridge from the Great southern railway station.

I rather like the place, there are a lot of good restaurants, some good watering holes such as James Squire, Harbourtown Hotel and Plenty of outlet shops, There is also a Glow in the Dark Mini Golf opeded up at the place which I believe is the first one of its kind in Australia.

Anyone knows whats happening with that dam ferris wheel. I am all for a toursist attraction but why on earth did they copy something from London or Singapore? THe one in the parks near by is quite ok.

I reckon they could come up with something totally original. Why not the replica of the famous river caves from the old days of Luna Park. Now that WAS a ride... I am so old at times. I really miss it!

Or better a museum of the Tivoli!!!!!

I bet you can all think of better ideas other than another bloody ferris wheel.

Yeah that docklands wheel was a bit of a disaster!!! I had a shot on the one near fed square and it is ok.

Docklands would attract me if it had somethng like Dreamworld or one of the water parks like "Wet n Wild"... though i guess we don't have the warm weather of the gold coast so maybe just give us Dreamworld and skip the water park idea!

Why is it so bad to be skeptic? My i recall a class i had at uni where I was told that the earth goes thru cycles of warm and cold times. We are supposed to have an ice age every 40,000 years or something like that. I forget the exact number.

So on that basis, I think global warming could be good! I really hate ice ages! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> Don't you? They really are very COLD!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/kosa.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/kosa.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' /> <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/kosa.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':kosa:' />

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_age

Quote:Predicted changes in orbital forcing suggest that the next glacial period would begin at least 50,000 years from now, even in absence of human-made global warming

Quote:Moreover, anthropogenic forcing from increased greenhouse gases might outweigh orbital forcing for as long as intensive use of fossil fuels continues[31]. At a meeting of the American Geophysical Union (December 17, 2008), scientists detailed evidence in support of the controversial idea that the introduction of large-scale rice agriculture in Asia, coupled with extensive deforestation in Europe began to alter world climate by pumping significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere over the last 1,000 years. In turn, a warmer atmosphere heated the oceans making them much less efficient storehouses of carbon dioxide and reinforcing global warming, possibly forestalling the onset of a new glacial age.

Has anybody heard of anything along the lines of Global Warming being to do with the position of our sun in relation to its celestial orbit that will peak in December 2012?

heh, nope... i do not Google Coincidences. i am just a victim of fear campaigning, although; the good news about the espoused theory on Global Warming is that the peak is in 2012 and then Global Cooling will begin... weeeeee‼

I'm not predicting anything, Peter... just quoting.
If the planet disappears what will happen to the moon?
um... start orbiting the sun as a really tiny planet ala the late Pluto?... or become a really large asteroid.

What the heck would make our planet disappear?

Consider tipping right over to the left by listening to the left winger Phillip Adams on ABC's Radio National's Late Night Live.

Philip hosted a really interesting episode last night on the psychology of pricing: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/latenightlive/sto...010/2860260.htm

You are probably right, Peter... to much interpretation of correlative data as causation.

I've got the t-shirt of the following XKCD web comic: http://xkcd.com/552/

it was a site with several forums. It seems the majority were very right wing liberals and almost unanimously believed climate change was crap.

It was pretty clear they did want opposing views on the site.

I have become very tired of defending the science because a growing number believe they know more. They follow the views of a few rogue scientists. Of course they chose a very innocent remark of mine to justify me getting banned. I must say that several defended me.

Of course it is very much like the days when a few scientists believed smoking was perfectly safe despite the evidence.
