Hello Everyone
#1
Hello everyone, I am a young Scottish 23 year old male and am coming to Melbourne in a couple of months and of course my biggest concern, as I'm sure some of you guys feel, is making friends. I was just wondering how you have found it and what sort of things you have done to try and meet people. People say that I am very honest, nice and down to earth. I hope this will help me massively but am well aware that it won't be easy and I will have to make a big effort to get out and about. I like soccer and love going to the gym so will definitely be trying to get involved with some classes and things.

hi delboy! welcome to melbourne chat!

there are lots of peope in your position. my advice is to:

1) Chat with other newcomers in this forum.

2) And like you said ....join into organised activities ...particularly try to pick ones where other people new to melbourne are likely to be. As they will be in the same boat as you and just as keen to make new friends.

have a good one,

glen

This is a great place to start delboy1875 (Year Of Birth i take it!?) ... when i went through a huge breakup from a long term relationship i was right back to square 1 with making friends ... i joined various forums such as this one and just tried to find people that would love to meet up casually and hopefully start a friendship out of it.

Sadly i have only been successful at organising 1 coffee meet - but i'm hoping to get another under way in the next couple weeks or something ...

Another GREAT site is meetup.com (Glen, please don't block that link! lol) They have various friendship meetup groups you can join for free (in most cases) and they're a GREAT place to meet people and help ease loneliness!

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks Kara, no 1875 was the year in which my favourite soccer team was founded, you must of misread it as 1975, I admit its an easy mistake to make. That's a shame you have only had one coffee meet up, it must be very difficult trying to build a life up for yourself in a huge new city but am sure everything will be okay. I was looking at some of the cool things that Melbourne has such as the spa baths, the aquarium and even a bar called Chill on, at least I think that is the name. Everything is made of ice, that sounds crazy but everything inside it is frozen ice and they give you ugg boots when you go in and jackets, looks really cool. So I would definitely love to go and see all of those things with someone.

OHHHHHHH my bad! That'l teach me for posting when i'm far too fatigued to be doing so! lol

Yah i have heard of that ... i have heard mixed things though ... you either like it or you don't - i think it's one of those things that'd be cool to try once but you probably wouldn't go back again. Same as this restaurant in Melbourne somewhere that's called the Dark Side and it's literally a restaurant that is in PITCH BLACK, you get lead in by a waiter who is wearing infrared glasses ... having no light lightens your taste receptors resulting in better tasting food (apparently) ... i went a few years ago and it was an experience but really a rip off, you hardly got any food for the amount you paid - but an experience all the same.

Yeah, like i said, there are lots of online friendship/activity groups on MeetUp that do those sorts of things... you should look into it!

Hi delboy1875,

I'm pretty much in same position, just moved in and don't know too many people from here. I also like football a lot. World cup is almost here! If you would like to matches some night, let me know. Or anyone else too!
