Melb PC User Group is a computer club where I am a member. They have a special interest group for video production. Mostly lots of old dudes but they are pretty welcoming.

I have been looking around for something similar too. But alas, I cant find anything. So I am looking at starting one.

If anyone is interested in being involved, reply or message me.

Even if you just want to register your interest for when its up and running, let me know, So I can get an Idea for how many might be interested.

Thanks

Hi there Tonko,

Good to hear are you interested in making short films or watching selected pieces? i'd like to start a club pull our collective resources and make short films throughout 2011 and watch films also. So let me know how you get on as i'll be getting to Melbourne in early January.

Cheers

I Definitely want to make - It would be nice to get a group of people who, together, have the equipment and resources to make an independent film. You know, normal people with day jobs who meet a couple of times a week and/or on weekends or something. Go through the process of writing/finding a script, storyboarding, location-scouting, casting, shooting, editing, etc. - And then who knows, maybe find a small auditorium with a AV capabilities and put on a movie premier (like a theatre group putting on a play, only we'd show our Movie)

But as was mentioned in a discussion with a friend about how a group like that might work from week to week, it was brought up that sometimes, you might be waiting on a location or an actor or something, so instead of working on the film, the group might watch something. Maybe the special features on a similar film or something that involves the behind-the-scenes of film making... (as an example).

Im also waiting to hear from 2 other people in Melbourne who might want to get involved in some kind of film making club... so I think there will be enough interest if we look hard enough.

Anyway, that's where my head is at....

getting to melbourne? where are you now?

Tonko.

Well looks like we are on the same page. My main idea is to have as you said a weekly meeting discuss film ideas techniques for groups and enter short film together. I figure if we can pull our collective resources and ideas experience etc to make short film and learn techniques together I'd be looking to enter the festival circuits though with the films. But if we work in a team i guess we can always swap roles depend on the project.

But all that being said I'm probably getting well ahead of myself I'm currently living in sunny (ahem) London and it's time to come home so me and the lady are headed to Perth then driving to Melbourne in January. We will be based in Brunswick.

Oh, Festivals for sure!

Also, just so you know, I am now in contact with about 5 people including yourself that are interested in doing something like this.

Im thinking of getting them all together and bashing out some ideas about how this all might work, who knows what we'll come up with...

Obviously you wouldn't be able to make it if it was any time soon, but I'll mention that you are interested and that you will be joining us at a later date. Having said that is there an Idea (script/concept) that you want to put forward?

Hi Tonko

How did you go with getting this film club off the ground?

I've recently moved to Melbourne from Perth to pursue filmmaking and would love to make contact with some like-minded individuals. I would definitely be interested in putting together a couple of shorts and have a couple of scripts that could be used as a starting point.

cheers

Hey there...

I actually did spend a fair bit of time trying to get this going... I organised a meet and greet at one of the Local monthly short film nights a few months back and got lots of people who confirmed they were coming... but on the day.... all but one called, texted or emailed to cancel... so its was a total fizza. I figured doing it at film night with drinks, a relaxed environment and related entertainment would make it an easy choice for people who wanted to come along... that way if nothing eventuated, then at least people got to see some great short films and have a few drinks... But if people cant even be bothered to turn up to that... I don't know what more I can do.

Disappointing really.. I think the Idea had merit. And now, I have a whole bunch of other projects that I am working on now so I have sort of let the Idea die... But... In the back of my mind, I also thought that this Idea may work as an off-shoot to an existing amateur theatre group. I imagine there are a lot of people who join theatre groups (actors and crew) only because there is no infrastructure to support amateur film makers.... That's what I did many years ago. So I may look at approaching some existing groups and putting the Idea to them at a later date.

Having said that, if anyone thinks that might work, feel free to run with it....

Good luck.

Hey Guys

I've just been doing a search for indie film group, in Melbourne. And found this thread. I'd definately be interested. My background is multimedia/3D/VFX, compositing/Editing, and I've got particular insterested in VFX and 3d and combining with film.

My husband is also interested and is more into the sound side of film production.

we be happy to take part in it. Let me know when you guys are meeting or if its still happening.

Cheers

Hi there,

Wtiger, Zarkin and others whom have responded to the tread. Great to here from you! all! Yes I'm still very keen to get a tea together to work on projects. I have been chatting with Tonko over the last couple of months whilst I was in London now I have just re located to Brunswick in Melbourne and I'm keen to get the ball rolling on collaborative effort short films. Saying that I have just arrived as of Monday and I might need a week two to get my self sorted as far as work and hose stuff is concerned.

As far as the projects are concerned I'm looking to do short films 5- 10 minutes cheaply on a low to no budget. If this sounds like your cup of tea and would like to get involved and volunteer your time lets get together have a beer and see who is up for what and when etc. I you have an idea for a film great!

Hey,

It appears that this thread has been dormant for a while, but I have been trying to find a group that share film interests etc since I arrived in Melbourne (Jan). I don't have experience in filming but have watched and enjoyed plenty of movies and some short films and want to learn more about film and so on from people who share this interest.

(My Uni doesn't have a film club or anything... I have no idea why not)

Can you help me out or point me in the right direction?

Thanks!
