Best Beaches - Great Ocean Road Or Mornington Peninsula?
#1
Hi

I am planning a vacation in Australia in January and would be grateful for your advice re: best beaches in the Melbourne area. There is a lot of information in the web, but I'd love to hear what the locals say...Basically the choice is between staying on the Mornington Peninsula or somewhere on the Great Ocean Road (Apollo Bay? Lorne? Queenscliff?) for 6 days. The idea is to stay in one hotel close to the beach and explore the surrounding area. I am not keen to surf, so the calmer the waters - the better. Any advice is welcome <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

Many thanks!

Lorne is a nice spot.

If you don't want waves find a spot within Port Phillip Bay. The mornington Penisula has waves on the ocean side and calm waters on the Port Phillip Bay side. Maybe somewhere around Rye would be good.

Thanks! And if I am choosing between Lorne and Rye, would you say that attractions on the Great Ocean Road are more interesting and worth seeing vs. those on the Morn. Peninsula? I plan to take a car and drive around.

Depends on what you like. If you like wineries and stuff like that the mornington penisula is nice.

Try and go see the penguins at Phillip Island if you get a chance! they are very cute. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Would really depend on the type of holiday you were after, what age, who your traveling with (family, kids ect) and what you wanted to do whilst on your holiday. If you wanted to be doing a bit of sight seeing whilst your here I'd say to go somewhere along the great ocean road.
