Maybe they were the ones that got their money out in time.

Yep it took a long period of almost total financial irresponsibility to get to this stage, the irresponsibilty is almost equally shared by the borrowers and the lenders.
 The damage is going to be visited on those who had no hand in this fiasco - apart from believing that money grows on trees.
