Could you tell me what is the weather like in Melbourne? I heard that it rains always. Is it true? Is it cold in winter? Hot in summer? You live there eventually =) And you know it better than any weather forecast)

46??? Oh my God  <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Then all the tourist guides definitely lie! They say that the temperature doesn't go higher than 25 in summer X) And lower than 10 in winter  <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Well at least we have almost the same here (0/-5 in winter, 35 in summer) (I live in the south of Russia). But I thought that in Australia it is always warm =) According to information in the Internet <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Does it really rain 15 days every month in Melbourne?

i think we had a 46 degree once in history so don't worry too much. most summers we get 3 or 4 days that are over 40 degrees.

and we might get a zero degree minimum in winter perhaps once every couple of years. most of the time the winter minimum would not go below 5 degrees.

as for the rain, it doesn't rain much. we had a lot of rain this year but that was unusual. the last few years we actually had a long drought and we had barely any rain, even in winter.

have a good one, glen

The tourist guides you are referring to are talking about the average temperatures in Melbourne in Summer and Winter, respectively. Although temperatures significantly lower or higher than the average temperatures aren't uncommon. And yes, on extremely rare occasions it can reach 46C in Melbourne but during our Summers, there are usually no more than 5 days above 40C. In Winter, nights below 10C and even 5C are pretty common, but maximum temperatures during the day of below 10C are extremely rare.

There's this illusory belief that Melbourne weather is characteristic of rain, cold and overcast days. When it fact, Melbourne has cool Winters, mild Springs and Autumns and hot Summers. For instance, Melbourne has typically hotter Summer days than Sydney, significantly less rain than Sydney and more sunshine than Sydney.

Melbourne is a friendly city! Enjoy your stay in Melbourne!

Peter.

Wow, actually this was the information I hoped to hear))) This kind of climate sounds perfect to me)

I've heard that in Melbourne it's not common to swim in the ocean, cause there is a cold stream there. Is this true?

Depends which ocean but the inner city bays are pretty stinky and unwelcoming in my opinion--i was badly stung by a jellyfish not much more than 15 Km south of the city center just a few months ago.

People still swim in the summer.

People mostly swim in Port Phillip Bay. You can check the water tempratures here:
