How to make friends, well it's a good idea first of all to introduce yourself, i.e. do you have a first name? Also, telling people what your interests are may give them an inclination as to whether or not they may want to meet your aquaitance.

I definitely have to second Glen's comment. meetup.com is a fantastic site for doing activities, meeting people and making friends. There are meetup groups all over the world on the site, and there are plenty in Melbourne. I have been to meetups listed on the site in Melbourne a few times and have had fun experiences.
