The Myer windows last year were a disappointment. Indeed in recent years they have been an excuse to promote a new book. I don't have a great problem with that because anything that promotes reading is in my opinion a good thing.
This year however after a long time they have returned to the tradition and they are doing the nut cracker. Some of the traditional stories should I think be revived then again I also like the idea of a few modern Aussie authors being promoted.
The nutcracker is a lovely traditional tale.
Its actually quite lovely.
The test I think is to see if the windows can be as magical for adults as they are to children. I still don't think the windows are quite an impressive as the old days and I think that's because I think the genius behind them Fred Asmussen is long gone and maybe I am older.
Still I must say this year they look fresh and delightful. I am scared that soon they will be computer enhanced images.
Over all in our department stores it is no where near as impressive as it was in the past.
Us older folk were so lucky that we had Myer and Foys rooftop carnival with its beautiful animated figures and rides. Of course there's Santa Land and the staff do a great job. I took my God daughter who thought the train was a bit babyish... shes four!!!
Unfortunately because of the OHS laws and everyone understandably scared of being sued for accidents today the old magic has gone.
