If like me you have been disappointed with the Royal Melbourne show take a trip today to the Whittlesea show and its pretty close though obviously smaller to the old version of the show.
These days the Melbourne show is dominated by rides...the minute you get in you see  rides games (wrongly called side shows) and food.
No grand parade no animals to speak of although there are a few token animals here and there/. No pavilions though.
It is no longer he show. They seem to be busier promoting mater chef.
However at Whittles it has the atmosphere of a real show and its close to Melbourne.
Its worth a trip rain or shine.
Country shows are mostly much better fun and worth supporting.
