Actually slang. Derived from how the conservatives in france, during the French revolutin, sat on the right side of their governing house (whatever that was). In America, (and this is widely misunderstood by college students) Right Wing refers to conservatives who, by their nature, favor a small limited government with little power and little control over the people, with most of the power residing within the local state governments. Basically anti-federalist. In other words, the politicians who DON'T want more government involved with your everyday life. They don't want the government to get too big have a lot of control over the people.

Describes most of the parliament then. Liberal / National / Labor / One Nation all have Right wing leaders.

Left wing is a very generic term to describe a political position relative to what is currently accepted as the general consensus. Contrary to popular belief left-wing extremist are as common and possible and extreme as right-wing extremists. If you are left thinking you generally aspire to state-control and inclusiveness regardless of others. If you are right thinking you generally aspire to freedom and responsibility with a few strict rules - life is what you make it and there is no welfare-state to rely on.

Depends on the policy mate. I go left when it comes to Workers rights, Pensions, Asylum seekers.

I go right when it comes to handouts like baby bonuses, paid maternal leave, negative gearing.

 

 

How can right wing be seen as a bad thing given it's emphasis on freedom?

Because it frequently attacks freedom by disadvantaging vulnerable members of society.

Look at the 2014 budget and subsequent polices for starters.

Making people work to 70 isn't freedom. Neither is a $7 doctor fee.

Since then, the Menzian values we were promised are held to ransom by the right.

Innovation turned to imitation.

 

That would include freedom from being ripped off by the union bosses.

Why do people believe those who say they are the workers party when they are clearly anti worker - job destroying and self agggrandising union bosses are the exact opposite of the workers friends.

Because they have a track record to back up their claims.
