All governments tell us that "crime figures" are falling.

But they never tell you that crime is rising!

Crime "figures" usually fall if they get caught committing a crime <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

That is very true. I partly blame the media (and society in general) because every little mistake a government makes is given way too much coverage and scrutiny. If the cost of one little mistake is massive then of course the government will do silly things to conceal it. The fact is that the government is imperfect and makes mistakes all the time!

Hi guys!

I can make it easy for you.

THERE HAS BEEN NO INCREASE IN THE CRIME RATE, ITS DECREASED.

That does not mean we have no had bad crime but compared to crimes like the Graham Thorn case and others we are compared to other countries pretty good. We have good gun laws . Thanks John Howard!

Actually its generally oppositions that go on about the rise in crime. Both sides of politics realise its politically expedient and advantageous to go for a beat up and play the scare card. I cant speak for other states but here in Victoria its been relatively stable however that was not always the case. The crime rate here was at its all time highest per cap in the 1920s.

Like every other country Australia has great affection for our famous criminals one was the much loved Ned Kelly and of course Squizzy Taylor.

Taylor was a central figure in the 'Fitzroy Vendetta', there was one gang from Richmond and another based in Fitzroy and it was a bloody violent feud. It made any of the feuds here seem like tea parties.

Its well worth doing a bit of research on the crime rate of the twenties.

WE live in very very peaceful times today.

Friends are often shocked when I detail the crime rate of the twenties. Of course CJ Dennis paints a superb picture of the great characters of that time.

Australia loves its bad guys!

I find it quite amusing when they go on about drinking in the streets ..yes its bad and it must be controlled but compared to the the six o clock swill ITS NOTHING.

I just noticed how its easier to edit these days here Glen. Brilliant.

I think we are in for more spin.

OK we all know I am not an admirer of the Liberals but I do know there is talent on that side so why oh why did they pick such a dreary old hack like Napthine?

Loiuise Asher has hardly ever put a foot wrong. I have found her to be excellent.
