Next I shall be asking about things such as bike lanes...are there such things generally in Australia? In Melbourne in particular?

we have bike lanes on some roads. in some places we also have off road bike paths.
Vicroads Interactive Bike Map
the best website i found so far is the Vicroads website. It breaks down bike access as being either: Wide Kerbside;
On-Road Lane; or Off-Road Path.
