I noticed a lot of events listed in the forum. Are the majority of these re-occuring or one off events. I'm trying to find some events which really capture the spirit of the city and make it what it is. Also, I'd be keen to find some events which are put on for the residents of melbourne rather than tourists.

most of the events are well attended by locals. the only ones that seem to attract lots of tourists would be the commonwealth games and maybe some other international sporting championships like the recent FINA championships....and also maybe a few people visit because of the Australian Open Tennis competition.
true blue aussie event for melbourne would be the footy (AFL football), the cricket (usually held at the MCG), moomba festival, the ANZAC day dawn service (to commemorate the fallen in WWII), the Melbourne Cup (horse race) and the Melbourne Show (an agricultural show with some fun for the kids).
