i suspect if the year was around 1906 then it would have been about 526,400 for the melbourne population.

look for this table in the PDF linked to above (on page 158):
those 1906 figures are interesting, but i'm afraid that's a bit late to have much bearing on the story of the victorian gold rush. the gold rush was a period in the history of victoria from around 1851 to the late 1860's.

the discovery of gold brought a large number of people to victoria, most of them arriving by sea at melbourne. melbourne's population doubled within a year. Between 1851 and 1854, the population of victoria grew from 77,000 to over 200,000. by 1857, the population had doubled, with 140,000 living in tents.

the population of melbourne grew from 29,000 in 1851 to 123,061 in 1861. the arrival of people seeking gold was more than the infrastructure could cope with - in four months in 1852, 619 ships arrived in hobson's bay, carrying 55,057 passengers. the first tent settlement was on emerald hill in south melbourne, then a larger one was established in 1852 on the southern side of the river. disease was common there, and in 1853 there was a fever epidemic. there was also temporary housing in in the form of immigrants homes built with contributions from government, the churches, and public subscription. housing sprang up in south melbourne, port melbourne, prahran, richmond, collingwood, fitzroy and north melbourne, but the housing crisis took many years to ease. melbourne quickly overtook sydney as australia's largest city, a title it retained until the late 19th century.

as far as other consequences of the increase in population were concerned, hotels opened throughout the city and an 1856 police inquiry found there were 63 ‘houses of ill-fame’ and 198 prostitutes. the victoria police force was established in 1853 and 50 constables arrived from london to reinforce the local force.
thanks helen!!!! you are a great researcher!!! cheers, glen <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
