Whats is Melbourne city Council doing about cleaning our streets - Can John So get involved - Ihave recently been overseas and the standard of cleanliness in inner city streets was wonderful compared to ours. Why cant we have a fleet of people on 24 hr rotation cleaning our streets - especially cigarette butts - and why cant we have street 'butt' walkers giving out fines for littering our now 17th most liveable city? In the last few years the street cleanliness of Melbourne inner city has really declined.

Love to have someone get big on this so that we can be proud to walk our lovely streets.
I agree that the city could be cleaner. They do have lots of cleaners but there are just so many messy people in melbourne it is hard to keep up with them. <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
I just did a search on the Melbourne city council website for "littering" and found heaps of articles about litter. Particularly about cigarette butts.

It looks like they have been trying for years to fix the problem but with little success. The fact is that most smokers drop their butts on the ground. A complete mind shift is required (not very different to the change in attitude about picking up dog poop which seems to have been a big success!!!!).

Now I am not sure how to go about doing this with smokers. Maybe if some smokers who read this can tell us what it would take to stop smokers dropping butts!!! <img src='http://www.melbournechat.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
Very simple - we solved it by having work places put up receptacles for cigarette butts. If they had butts on the ground instead of in the receptacles, they got a fine from the city. It changes the way people think if they are available. The receptacles cost less than the fines, so they are all over the city.
