Melbourne History Exhibition - The Impermanent City
The Impermanent City
Building demolition and Melbourneâs changing skyline become the focus of a new exhibition at City Museum at Old Treasury this Spring. The Impermanent City charts the path of destruction through Melbourne and remembers the architectural marvels that have fallen by the wayside. Since the 1880s many of Melbourneâs most beautiful and iconic buildings have been torn down in the name of progress. The Impermanent City reveals a lost Melbourne residual within the present-day streetscape, tracing the ghosts of Melbourneâs built environment through the tangible surviving links. These architectural fragments have remained in-situ for generations and most people now pass them daily with little comprehension of their meaning. This exhibition documents, celebrates and mourns Melbourneâs relentless transitional carnage, and reveals in detail, for the first time, where these building fragments lie.
